چکیده

Loyalty discounts are nonlinear tari s that condition rebates or marginal prices on meeting aggregate purchase or market share targets. ese discounts are widespread, and are o en the impetus for consumers to form buying groups, or group purchase organizations (GPOs). is papermodels the competitive e ects of the introduction of a GPO to amarket for which the GPO’s member preferences are horizontally di erentiated. We show that although in a monopoly setting, nonlinear tari s are an e ective way to extract consumer surplus, when suppliers compete using such schedules, the results are far more competitive than simple Bertrand-Nash competition with linear tari s. In our model, the nonlinear schedule puts all customers “in play” to a degree that contrasts sharply with the competition at the margin characteristic of constant perunit prices. We demonstrate that asymmetry in preferences does not disturb the e ciency or the price advantage for consumers of our results, but that with asymmetrical preferences, market shares for the preferred supplier are higher than under constant per-unit prices. Finally, we examine the e ects of bundling discount schedules across product categories when oligopolists compete with nonlinear tari s.

TheWelfare Performance of Sequential PricingMechanisms

Consumers are commonly required to subscribe to particular tariff options before uncertainty regarding their future purchases gets resolved. Since the general comparison of welfare performance of different pricing mechanisms is ambiguous, this paper empirically evaluates the expected welfare associated to standard nonlinear pricing and optional tariffs by using information directly linked to th...

CARESS Working Paper 99–11 Quantity Discounts for Taste–Varying Consumers

When a monopolist asks consumers to choose a particular nonlinear tariff option, consumers do not completely know their type. Their valuations of the good and/or optimal quantity purchases are only fully realized after the optional tariff has been subscribed. In order to characterize the menu of optimal nonlinear tariffs when consumers demands are stochastic, I assume that the distributions of ...

Should Indians Pay more for Renewable Energy Based Electricity? - The Need for Evidence Based Consumer Tariffs for Electricity in India

India seeks to achieve 175 Giga-Watt (GW) of Renewable power by 2022. As of December 2017, out of 333 GW of total installed capacity of electricity, close to 62GW come from renewable sources. Meeting the set targets calls for augmentation of renewable energy based capacities as expeditiously as possible. However, the sick financial health of the distribution companies/utilities, who act a...

On the optimal external tariff of a free trade area with internal market integration

Previous analyses of free trade areas suggest that member countries reduce external tariffs to the level that improves welfare of non-member countries. Using an oligopoly model with product differentiation, this paper shows that when a free trade area entails endogenous change from segmented to integrated markets for internally produced goods, external tariffs become strategic complements and t...
